Explode and Blast...

Well, the explosion tragedy was not over yet...another one had taken place at the new Jusco Aeon Outlet in Bachang, Malacca.

The explosion occurred at the food court section on the ground floor of the three-storey complex just before 1 p.m. on Monday as workers and tenants were busy making final preparations for Thursday's grand opening.

The force of the blast caused a 2m wide hole in the building wall, showering glass and debris over a 25m radius and caused a small fire.

A supervisor was killed by flying debris, 6 in critical conditions , 8 with serious injury and 6 others received outpatient treatment.

A joint probe between Fire and Rescue Services Department, Malaysian Energy Commission and DOSH focused on the possibility of gas leakage and negligence.

However, investigations was only able to be proceeded after the centralised gas piping system in the building is purged of trapped gas to prevent another explosion.

The tragedy also caught the attention of NIOSH chairman, Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye.

I had similar working background except that the medium of fuel was natural gas. Through my experience with natural gas, there was stringent requirements and approvals from the authorities especially JBEG and JKKP required prior to any piping constructions.

Infact an officer or a representative of either department shall witness on the hydrotest of the pipings.

A final certificate (PTO) shall be obtained prior to any commissioning of the system.

It is also parts of the gas regulations that the gas company and the contractors should appoint only gas competent engineers and supervisors only.

It was sad that such tragedy took place despite the stringent enforcement from the authorities.
